Every day, I am asked the same question: “What can I do to keep my pets safe?”. It’s a question that many ask and don’t know exactly what the best answer is. There are quite a few measures that if implemented, can help keep your pet from ever going missing. Now, even if you do everything right, accidents can still happen, but if you follow these steps, chances are your pet will be safe.
First, always microchip your pet and complete it with your vital information. That way if your pet ever goes missing and is found, if they are brought to the Vet, can be scanned to get the info of the family. Having a collar with tags that have your contact info is a huge plus as well. Now, even if you have both of these items covered, your pet can still go missing. In the Hudson Valley, like most other areas in this State, there is a ton of wildlife that can prey on your pet when out in the elements. It’s a scary truth. There is also the human element, whether via a car or theft, that can harm your pet. And there is the weather. Very hot stretches in the Summer and cold temps in the Winter can cause serious harm or death to a pet that is away from home. This all leads to my last point for preventative measures around your home.
Your home is not only yours, but your pet’s home too. Always make sure to never leave your pet unattended in your yard, even if you have a fenced-in yard. Certain breeds like to dig and will find a way out, no matter how secure you think your yard is. Not only can dogs get out, but if left unattended, can be stolen too. Pet theft is on the rise and is a very real problem around the Hudson Valley, New York State and the Country. Leaving your dog alone outside invites people with bad intentions to come in and take your pet in a matter of seconds. Please always keep an eye on them when outdoors. When it comes to cats, please realize that they are more vulnerable to prey and automobile traffic. People coming and going from your home is always an opportunity for an escape artist to get out. Many times, it is a door left ajar that gives your pet that opportunity to run out and get lost. Always be conscious of where your pet is when people are coming or going from your home.
Nothing is foolproof, but if you apply these measures, the odds are in your favor that your pet will remain safe at home with you. Feel free to comment and add other ideas below. :)
Thank you,
