Caesar is old and slow. With his inability to see or hear well he never wanders far. Our yard is small and he knows it well. As soon as he feels the leaf line to the woods, he turns around. He knows his boundaries and never walks up the rocky wooded hill behind our home. He is usually quick to do his business and come back inside. If he did wander that morning it makes the most sense that he stayed on even ground and wandered through the driveway to the road. A neighbor two houses down says he heard a vehicle stop, the door open and close, and take off toward 341, the closest intersection, around the time Caesar went missing. The first night he was missing a dog who has a success rate at finding lost dogs came and tracked his scent. The first direction she went was down the driveway toward the road. She walked us all the way into the town of Kent. We turned her around and she walked down Maple street Ext back toward 341. When we got back to the house she walked up into the woods behind the house. Scarlett (dog) and Emmie her handler have been here every single day for two hours or more searching for Caesar. She’s brought us in every direction around the house. We’ve found multiple dead animals but no tangible trace of Caesar. We’ve seen deer and racoons around our home. We’ve found racoon poop and possibly bear poop. A trail cam set up in our back woods sees deer and a bear once, likely the bear seen last year in our yard. We’ve contacted the Kent Land Trust who owns land behind the property we live on and will alert hunters to keep an eye out. The Northwest Rod and Gun club is informing their members of the situation. If he was taken by a predator, finding his body would allow us to move on. HOWEVER, based on the time of day, and the fact that Scarlett can’t find his body we are believing this theory less and less. If he was alive and burrowed somewhere around our home, Scarlett would have found him. We would have found him wandering within that first hour. If he was stuck he would bark. His nose still works and he’s traced my scent many times before. Based on my belief that if he did wander he would wander toward the road, the fact that a nearby neighbor heard a car that morning, and that Scarlett has taken us into town twice now and walks around town and back makes me fairly confident that he was picked up by someone that morning.
We know he’s out there and we are working tirelessly everyday to find him. There are over 200 flyers posted in surrounding areas including South Kent, Kent, Bulls Bridge, Gaylordsville, New Milford, Macedonia, Warren, Cornwall, Washington, New Preston, Bantam, and South Amenia. We have contacted nearby animal hospitals, shelters, groomers, and other dog related businesses. We’ve contacted other local businesses in the area and informed animal control in multiple towns, multiple lost dog organizations, the police, the fire department, and have had someone reach out to the local school secretaries. We have notified radio, WZBG, and news, WFSB. I’m in contact with the Kent Animal control officer and a woman from CT Dog Gone Recovery. We have posted at many local post offices and know that delivery drivers are keeping an eye out. We’ve posted on Craigslist and Nextdoor, and someone reached out to let me know they posted on Cuddles United. We scan Craigslist and PetFinder everyday. We’ve knocked on doors and talked to people.
Someone commented tonight that a dog with similar appearance was seen in Washington this afternoon. After following through it’s likely they saw a dog that lived nearby and we don’t believe it was Caesar. The only way he could have traveled that far is if someone picked him up and then dropped him off.
Others have suggested that he may have wandered off to die. We don’t believe this. He was very chipper the night before and he is healthy. While he doesn’t walk on a leash anymore (he is very slow) we do take him to the park to smell around and wander with supervision. We have focused on stimulating him mentally despite his old age with puzzle games and nose games in the house. Therefore, I don’t believe it was his “time”.
We will continue to work to find him. Please share and check your property and keep an eye out. He is small but he is mighty. If you’ve had the pleasure of meeting Caesar you know how special he is. He has touched so many hearts in his life and the pain we feel is shared among those who love him too. He has friends all around the world. I feel that all of the energy going into this will better our chances of bringing him home. The support and kind words have made the hurt we feel more bearable. We are grateful for the incredible people in our lives who continue to care and support us during this time. We are hopeful. #BringCaesarHome
Thank you for your time,
Sincerely,
